It’s my understanding that the province was named after the lake. So if we’re going to change Lake Ontario to Lake America, shouldn’t we change Ontario to America? And if so, is the capital of America Washington or Toronto?

Apparently Ryerson University was changed to Metropolitan University because we don’t like Egerton Ryerson anymore. Something to do with the Indian residential school program. But ‘Ontario’ wasn’t an honorific we decided to dishonour instead. If anyone it’s Amerigo Vespucci we’re now encouraged to dishonour. Something to do with the genocide of the Western Hemisphere. So perhaps the Americas should be renamed Haudenosaunee or Anishinaabe.

Or maybe not. Maybe there’s nothing more to a name than it directs the listener to who or what the speaker is talking about. If so, what name do you propose for the current President of the United States?
