What Fox is reporting, but MSNBC is being assiduous not to acknowledge, is that one of the reasons behind the Democrats’ defeat in November is the growing rejection of wokeism. Why has the left gone silent on this? Because to acknowledge that wokeism is being ushered out the door is to give it an extra push in that direction.
For my own part, if wokeism is indeed past its best-before date, I’m happy. I’m happy even if its demise is accompanied by some pretty scary co-travelings. Such as? Such as the threat to America’s reliability as an ally, to women’s reproductive autonomy, to … Is an end to wokeism worth all this? I think it is. But then I’m not a Ukrainian. And I’m not a woman.
But neither am I an academic any more. So why should I care? I guess because somewhere in the back of my mind I still fancy myself “a man for all seasons”. Because I think the world will be a better place – even for those who think it won’t be – if we’re free to question whether the received view need always be well received. But I do acknowledge, in much the way Fox cannot, that this may prove a pyrrhic victory if, after the Ukraine falls the next is Poland, or after the women they go for the Jews. As I’ve revealed in a number of these entries, I’m a time traveler. But only in the one direction, not the other. Maybe I should work on that.
